Sea-themed Library: Woodingdean Primary School

Woodingdean Primary School is a community school with around 380 pupils, situated at the foot of the South Downs in Brighton & Hove, East Sussex.

Objective

School Business Manager, Joanna Jones, got in touch with Paper Plus in January 2022. The objective: to transform the school library from a functional yet tired space into an inspiring and relaxing environment that would become the heart of the school.

Solution

Through careful consultation with Paper Plus Sales Manager, James O’Malley, our team embarked on one of the most fun projects we’ve had the pleasure of being part of. Jo and her team at Woodingdean had a clear vision of an ‘underwater sea theme’ and with careful research and creativity we put forward designs that were able to provide all the functionality and practically required while also remaining fun, colourful and exciting befitting of a primary school setting.

Results

The resulting library is a beautiful, underwater oasis of calm. Curved and comfortable seating throughout evoke the movement of water; the front desk engineered to look like a boat; chill-out reading nooks adorned with seaweed decorations and calming music and comfortable cubby-holes nestled among port hole-shaped book shelving.

Artwork also played a huge part in the decoration of the library. The school commissioned a stunning mural by Zara Wilkins and the ceiling is adorned with 388 fish – each decorated by every child at the school.

The build was completed in one day in June 2022 and officially opened the following month.
