Creating an Ergonomic Desk Space for Teachers
The teaching space has now returned to the ‘normal’ classroom and in-person way of working. During the coronavirus pandemic, many teachers were delivering their lessons from dining room tables, via laptops and tablets. Now, the majority of teachers and students are in a classroom environment, and learning and teaching as they previously did.
But many classrooms across the UK are unnoticeably different from what they were 10 or even 20 years ago. Ergonomics and the health and wellbeing of teachers and staff are more important than ever.
Adjustable ergonomic chairs, sit and standing desks, and ergonomic accessories should be replacing old, and unsuitable equipment. This change to ergonomic equipment will allow teachers to teach safely, effectively, and whilst ensuring good musculoskeletal health.
What is ergonomics?
Ergonomics takes into consideration the design of the human body, and how best to design products that are easy and safe to interact with. Making sure that the product and the user fit perfectly.
For employees who don’t have ergonomic work equipment, they can experience pains and injuries that can impact their ability to work or work effectively. These are also known as musculoskeletal disorders.
These can include:
- Swollen and stiff joints
- Lower back pain
- Cramps
- Muscle tightness
- Eye problems
- Pain and discomfort in the neck
- Pain and discomfort in the shoulders
- Pain and discomfort in the back
- Tingling or numbness in the hands, arms, and wrists
Desk chair
An ergonomic desk chair will have been designed to support the human body. Prioritising posture, health, comfort, and support of the body. Ergonomic chairs have the ability to be adjusted, making them customised to the individual who is sitting on the chair. With the option of adjusting the seat height, tilt, recline, backrest, armrest, and headrest. Ultimately providing essential lumbar support, and overall support to the body.
Desk
An ergonomic desk will be the correct height for the user. Meaning that there is enough space under the desk for the legs and for the feet to be placed flat on the floor. When a monitor, and keyboard are placed on the desk, the screen should be around 50cm from your eyes. Ensuring that you are not slouching to view the screen. An adjustable height desk is great for ergonomics, allowing the user to swap between sitting and standing. Whilst adjustable monitor arms also provide added benefits, where the height and angle of the monitor can be adjusted to suit the user’s position.
