Creative Christmas Craft Ideas for Teachers: Festive Projects for the Classroom
The second half of the Autumn term brings the countdown to Christmas and all the things that come with it- carols, nativities and maybe even a visit from Father Christmas! It is also a great time to decorate your classroom and bring the spirit of Christmas alive. There are so many craft ideas online that it can be hard to choose the right one for your class. Here are our top 5 Christmas craft ideas that will provide cheer to your class, as well as simple preparation for you.
Sock Snowman
This is one of our favourite activities to make with KS2 primary school children, although older students will love it too! Ask your class to bring in an old sock from home that they don’t mind cutting up, fill it with uncooked rice and then tie with rubber bands to make the snowman shape. Your class can then let their creative juices flow and add buttons, a scarf and a face to their snowman. Once the snowman is finished, you have a great gift! This is a fantastic class activity as it doesn’t require any sewing and there is minimal mess to clear up.
Pasta Wreath
Creating a pasta wreath is a nice, simple activity for KS1 or Reception children and makes a lovely Christmas card to take home to families. You will need green paint and glue as your main resources, as well as dried pasta. Children can arrange the pasta in the shape of a wreath and then paint each part. For extra decoration, you can add a ribbon and some glitter for the extra festive touch! As there are so many versions of pasta, you can pick and choose what will look best for the decoration you are making.
Paper Snowflake
This is another favourite, as the finished version look great as classroom decorations. However, it does require attention to detail and patience as a whole class of children try to fold paper at the same time! Again, the activity requires little resourcing- just some scissors, tape and string, as well as a stapler for you to use for the finishing touches. Paper snowflakes look great hanging from the ceiling in a school corridor, giving a wintry feel to your environment. Top tip is to add any decorations to the paper before you start folding or cutting, otherwise it becomes very difficult!
Paper Plate Decorations
Paper plates can be used for a wide range of Christmas crafts- they are easy to cut and can be decorated with paint, felt tips or colouring pencils. They are also cheap to resource and can be used throughout the year for different projects. Paper plate activities can be differentiated depending on the year group. You can make Christmas trees, angels- the list is endless! Paper plates are also good for using glue to attach things and great for younger children.
Finger Print Christmas Cards
The final idea for Christmas crafts is one for your youngest children, potentially EYFS or even nursery. Fingerprint Christmas cards make a cute gift for families and can be achieved with some paint and more importantly, little fingers! Designs can vary, from Christmas wreaths, to twinkling lights or reindeer heads. Adults can add finishing touches if need be, but they are a (fairly) quick and simple way of producing a Christmas card to send home at the end of the day. It is also a good chance to use up any old paint that is in the cupboard, ready for the Spring term.
